Towards a better integration of foreign-trained health care professionals

Nursing graduates and doctors trained abroad make up a significant workforce in the Canadian health care system. In 2012, the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) published a study stating that out of 75,142 doctors practising in Canada, nearly 25% were trained outside the country. This average rises to 38% for doctors in Newfoundland and Labrador and to 46.5% for Saskatchewan. In Quebec the proportion drops to 10.9%, less than in 1980 (16%). There were always proportionately fewer doctors coming to La Belle Province compared to the other provinces, perhaps due to the French language. They mainly come from France (411), Lebanon (156), Vietnam (126), Egypt (109) and the United States (91).
